ASBURY PARTNERS HOSTS SUMMER KICKOFF PICNIC

Weekend after school lets out, oceanfront redeveloper turns school grounds into neighborhood party.

Asbury Park, N.J. – Teaming up with the Asbury/Neptune Ministerial Alliance, Asbury Partners sponsored and coordinated a community picnic at the Asbury Park Middle School, complete with music, games, and great local food.

“From the beach and boardwalk to the downtown and Springwood Avenue, Asbury Park is one city,” said Larry Fishman, chief operating officer of Asbury Partners. “Though the focus of our particular redevelopment project is on the oceanfront, we know that for Asbury Park to revive, the spirit of the entire city must be reinvigorated.”

About a mile west of Asbury Partners’ project site, Fishman joined Asbury Park residents in a celebration to kick off the summer. Barbeque style food from famed Jennie’s restaurant was served, a deejay spun music, and party-goers played football, kickball and wiffleball.

“The picnic was a great celebration of the spirit of Asbury Park,” said Mayor Kevin Sanders, “and served as a terrific way to bring people together.”

Asbury Partners worked with the Asbury/Neptune Ministerial Alliance to help spread the word about the event and invite residents.

In May, Fishman met with African American community leaders to hear concerns and thoughts about the oceanfront redevelopment project. The community leaders took part in an interactive tour that showcased all of the elements of the redevelopment. Later, the group sat to discuss issues facing the city and its neighborhoods and potential solutions. The tour marked a step towards a concerted effort to keeping the entire city aware of the latest in the redevelopment efforts.

The picnic served as an invitation to the community to enjoy the beach during the summer while the oceanfront turnaround is underway.
